Palate

For Château Palmer, the vintage is simple, with fresh and iodized aromas and a fruity flavor.

Growing Conditions

Late. Damp and cold conditions in spring largely delayed the flowering, which the heat of August and September could do nothing to counter. The resulting wine was thin and acidic, and quickly peaked.

In 1980, January and February were very unstable with a mixture of both mild and chilly weather. In March, the temperatures were very low, which delayed vegetation. The sun appeared at the beginning of April although mornings were still cold. The vine started to grow on April 4th. A wet and cold spring delayed an irregular flower process and caused widespread coulure. A minimal harvest was expected, especially for the Merlot. July was wet and the warmth of August and September was not sufficient to allow the vineyard to make up for lost time. The vines began to slowly ripen mid-August, thus announcing a late harvest. Picking commenced on October 10th, almost a month later than usual and took place in cold and wet conditions, apart from the Merlot, which was harvested in better weather.

Winemaking

Although light in weight, the berries were healthy and the held a normal degree of acidity. Most wines from the 1980 vintage reached their peak quickly. A rigorous selection and the winemakers’ talent allowed some vineyards to develop wines that were supple, colorful and particularly fragrant.
