Palate

1994 is a very good vintage, ready to be enjoyed now.

We are now beginning to discover this vintage and its pure and deep style of a classically great Bordeaux wine.

Growing Conditions

Two for two. As in 1993, heavy rainfall in September proved problematic to the usual harvest routine. The grapes arrived in the chai in scattered fashion, leading to a long fruit-selection process and severe wine selections.

The first few months were particularly mild, with 15°C recorded in January and up to 22°C in February. Bud burst occurred very early on, on March 9th, a fortnight ahead of a normal year thus increasing the risk of frost. In April, the weather was cold and rainy, with some isolated frosts touching the Médoc on the nights of 15th and 16th. Good weather in May maintained the chances of early flowering, which came on June 5th. A hot summer, accompanied by thunderstorms in July helped towards good maturation. Fermentation on August 6th confirmed early harvesting and right up until the last moment, all the signs of a very great vintage were present. Excellent health requirement were recorded at the beginning of September. Harvesting began on September16th at Château Palmer, and a great wine was expected if the good weather continued. Unfortunately, the weather turned
and, as in 1993, rain disturbed these optimal conditions that we had enjoyed up until now.

Winemaking

Rigorous sorting and a strict selection of wines were essential.
