Palate
The wines are fruity, concentrated and rich, whilst being equally supple and well balanced. Today, the tannins are very well incorporated.
Growing Conditions
Hot and cold. A warm, sunny summer helped the vines to develop well, before rain and a cold snap in September prevented the grapes from swelling. The wine was not significantly, though, and the final vintage was a surprising Château Palmer, ready to be enjoyed.
1993 was the vintage of doubt. The year began with a very cold spell across the whole of France. From January 8th onwards, the weather changed and became mild for the season. This continued on through March, when actually a little rain would have been welcomed. The vines germinated early, as from March 20th but were slowed down by April showers. May followed on with a mixture of rain and sun. The first flowers appeared on 25th and flowering continued on incredibly quickly in excellent conditions. Vine growth progressed throughout the month of June and the grains swelled perfectly. The summer months were dry although not particularly sunny: July was fresh and August was hot and stormy. Perfect volume and maturity were expected. On September 6th, the weather became overcast and seriously deteriorated as of 10th. Heavy rains delayed harvesting. The quality of the grapes was not affected thanks to a drop in temperatures, which
limited the swelling of the berries and the dilution of the juices. After a lot of hesitation, picking finally began in the rain. Despite adverse weather conditions, quality was there.
