Sauternes ("So-turn") is the most famous Bordeaux region making deliciously sweet, golden-colored white wines. The area around Sauternes, or "Sauternais" includes other regions which also make yummy-unctuous and apricot-honey tasting wines.

Let's explore the sweet wines of Bordeaux.

Château Cantegrill Sauternes

Noble rot creates Sauternes which is considered one of the world's best sweet wines. Marmalade, honey and spice are just a few of the out-of-this-world flavors you'll experience. This is the most famous sweet wine appellation in Bordeaux.

Barsac sits just across the Ciron river (it's more like a creek) from Sauternes. With red and brown clay-limestone soils, tasters will find wines lighter-bodied and more nervy than the opulent style in Sauternes. A great wine for the cellar because Barsac gets richer as it ages.

Wines From The Other Sweet Wine Appellations of Bordeaux

The sweet wine secret is noble rot which occurs naturally in areas with fog and morning mist during harvest. These conditions occur along the rivers (and their tributaries) and it's why you'll find Bordeaux's sweet wine production close to the Garonne and Dordogne.
