A brief history
The history of our Château is linked to the family of the philosopher Charles de Montesquieu.
“I don’t know if my wine is famous because of my writing or if my writing is famous because of my wine.” Montesquieu.
A philosopher and author, in addition to being a public figure, businessman and winegrower, Charles de Montesquieu (or, to be precise, Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu) oversaw the development of his estate and vineyard in La Brède (near Bordeaux).
He was the first to promote the wines of the Graves de Bordeaux region, and did much to build their reputation throughout France and in Britain.
Le Clos Montesquieu has made it its mission to exalt the emblematic Bordeaux grape varieties which have been grown there, season after season, for more than two centuries. A wine estate on a human scale, it is the home of the Château des Fougères, a listed historical monument handed down over generations of the Montesquieu family. As the owners since 2010, the Coutière family cultivates its vines according to the principles of integrated agriculture, combining heritage and modernity.
Château des Fougères exemplifies the excellence expressed by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in their cultivation and blending. An authentic wine featuring an intense nose and a remarkable balance on the palate, with a surprising potential for cellaring. The quintessence of Le Clos Montesquieu.
